The 34th Arab Summit concluded on Saturday in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, focusing on a number of prominent Arab issues, especially regarding Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon.
Palestine
Regarding the situation in the Palestinian territories, the summit’s final statement affirmed the rejection of all forms of displacement and forced migration of the Palestinian people under any name or circumstances.
The statement emphasized the “centrality of the Palestinian cause” and supported the rights of the Palestinian people, particularly regarding self-determination, the establishment of a Palestinian state, the right of return, and compensation for refugees.
It condemned the “illegal practices by the Israeli aggression as the occupying power,” called for an “immediate halt to the Israeli aggression on Gaza,” and stressed the international community’s ethical and legal responsibilities to pressure for stopping the bloodshed and allowing aid into Gaza.
The statement also declared support for the Arab-Islamic plan adopted by the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation for recovery and reconstruction in Gaza, as well as support for Palestine’s full membership at the United Nations.
Syria
The final statement affirmed respect for the Syrian people’s choices, and the importance of Syria’s security, independence, and territorial integrity. It condemned “Israeli attacks on Syrian territory.”
The summit welcomed the lifting of U.S. sanctions on Syria and the easing of European sanctions, calling for an inclusive national dialogue encompassing all components of the Syrian people.
Lebanon
Regarding Lebanon, the Arab Summit called for preserving Lebanon’s security and territorial unity, implementing a ceasefire, adhering to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and condemning Israeli violations of this resolution.
Sudan
The statement emphasized the need to preserve Sudan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national institutions to prevent their collapse, through forming an independent, elected civilian government.
Libya
The statement stressed support for Libya and the importance of resolving its crisis through national dialogue, rejecting interference in its affairs, and the withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries from its territory.
It also called on the Libyan House of Representatives and the High Advisory Council to quickly agree on electoral laws that meet the Libyan people’s demands for simultaneous parliamentary and presidential elections.
The statement highlighted the importance of water security as a pillar of Arab national security and supported Egypt, Iraq, Sudan, and Syria in safeguarding their water rights.
Yemen
The “Baghdad Summit Declaration” expressed support for the “UN and regional efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive political solution to the Yemeni crisis,” adding “We renew our firm support for the Presidential Council in Yemen and back the government’s efforts to achieve reconciliation.”
The statement also expressed support for “the talks between Iran and the United States to reach positive results.”
