Carney Declares Victory in Canadian Election, Vows to Meet Trump on Basis of Sovereign Two-State Principle

Canadian Liberal Party leader and Prime Minister Mark Carney has declared victory in the general elections, delivering a message to his supporters that included his intention to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss economic and security relations “based on the principle of two sovereign states.”

Carney emphasized his commitment to working “constructively” with all political parties in Canada. Meanwhile, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre conceded defeat and congratulated the Liberal Party on its federal election win.

Mark Carney, 60, has served as Prime Minister of Canada since March. Though relatively new to politics, he brings a strong background in economics and has notably challenged President Trump, vowing to respond to tariffs and firmly rejecting any idea of U.S. annexation of Canada.

Canada’s public broadcaster had earlier projected a Liberal majority in the House of Commons, paving the way for Carney to form the next government.

President Trump had stirred political debate across Canada during the election campaign by announcing his intention to annex Canada into the United States and by imposing tariffs on some of the country’s key exports—moves that became central issues for both candidates and voters.
