The Ministry of Interior stated on Monday that the current security situation is the best since 2003, highlighting the arrest of approximately 2,500 individuals on charges of infiltration and antiquities smuggling. It also noted that the “drug containment” operation has led to a sharp rise in drug prices.

In a press conference presenting the statistics for the first quarter of 2025, attended by Alsumaria’s correspondent, Director of Media and Public Relations at the Ministry, Brigadier General Miqdad Miri, said: “The current security situation is the best since 2003.”

Miri added that “border forces have held discussions with border officials in neighboring countries to secure the border strip and are working on introducing radar systems to reduce reliance on human effort,” noting that “border control operations are the best in the history of the Iraqi state.”

He confirmed that “border forces have been equipped with drones fitted with thermal cameras with a range of 80 kilometers.”

He pointed to “international and UN recognition of our efforts in combating drugs,” adding that “drug prices have risen significantly following our operations.”

He explained that “new traffic directorates have been established, increasing from 12 to 22 sectors,” and noted that “the corruption rate in the electronic passport system is zero.”

Regarding civil defense, the ministry has contracted two aircraft for rescue and firefighting operations and activated the role of environmental police and oversight. Additionally, 938 rumors were addressed by the ministry’s anti-rumor division.

The Interior Minister’s activities over the past three months included 164 inspection visits, visits to provinces, participation in workshops, and travel to other countries.

Concerning arms control, Miri confirmed the completion of 694 offices across Iraq for weapons registration and purchase, with operations ongoing.

He also mentioned the arrest of 2,487 individuals, including Iraqi and foreign infiltrators and smugglers, as well as antiquities traffickers. Furthermore, the energy police managed to seize nearly 4 million liters of petroleum derivatives prepared for smuggling.
