In the following report, we review everything you need to know about smart glasses, including their advantages and disadvantages.
To begin with, the German Association for Information Technology states that smart glasses currently represent the latest trend in technology. These glasses, which rely on Augmented Reality technology, display information within the wearer’s field of vision.
Will they replace smartphones?
The association added that technology companies are currently working on developing smart glasses to potentially replace smartphones. For example, in the future, the glasses may display information and reviews about a restaurant just by the user standing in front of it and blinking.
To make the glasses more suitable for everyday use, developers are working to reduce their size so they resemble regular glasses, while also increasing battery life.
Do they harm the eyes?
The German Technical Inspection Association pointed out that virtual reality technology is not limited to the world of computer games but can also be used in the workplace, especially in the industrial field.
They added that continuous use of smart glasses does not harm the eyes. However, it is recommended to take breaks and avoid using them for several hours at a time, as this may cause eye strain in some cases.
The reason for this strain is the lack of head movement when using smart glasses, which leads to tension in the shoulders and neck. Additionally, users often fixate on a single point where work instructions or guidance appear on the glasses, increasing eye fatigue compared to constant motion.
Similar to working in front of computer screens, users of smart glasses should take short, regular breaks.
Latest release
At the beginning of this year, American company DigiLens announced the launch of its new smart glasses, MotoHUD, which display all essential data within the user’s field of view.
The company stated that the new glasses rely on a small projector embedded in the frame that projects images onto glass coated with a special layer. This technology can be installed in glasses and also integrated into helmets for motorcycle and bicycle riders, allowing navigation instructions or speed to be displayed.
The company added that when this technology is used by firefighters, it can display thermal images or building blueprints during rescue and firefighting operations.
Furthermore, DigiLens revealed that it is collaborating with Nintendo, the developer of the game Pokémon Go, to create a new game that uses smart glasses to display game content in the real world.
