Huawei Technologies is nearing the completion of a semiconductor R&D center in Shanghai, a move that will bolster China’s technological ambitions despite U.S. attempts to hinder its rise.

The center, which will be Huawei’s largest research facility globally, is expected to employ around 30,000 people, according to a statement on the Shanghai government’s website. It is located in the Qingpu district, covering an area of 1.6 million square meters, and features a limited road network, railways, and ready-to-use suspension bridges, as reported in the statement.

The new center aims to achieve advancements in semiconductor technologies for devices, wireless networks, and the Internet of Things, according to a report by state media in January citing an update from the Shanghai government. The total investment cost is 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion), as stated in a government release on the Qingpu website.
